Sharhiym Interview

I’m here with Sharhiym and I’m going to ask him a few questions about his music and talent.

Ok, first question. Why did you choose the keyboard?

Why did I choose the keyboard? Umm, I feel like in my generation, keyboard is not the go to thing, it’s mainly like rap or producing. Producing is very strict beats and they don’t really want to broad out. I chose piano because it broadened me to other genres and I feel like I can cross genres and the piano is a good instrument for that.

What age did you start?
I started at the age of 14.

Who is your idol and why?
I look up to Cory Henry because the stuff that he does is ridiculous, even for people that don’t understand piano, if they saw him play they would be like what the hell. He has that effect on people and musicians who are watch watching him.

Does his music have an influence on you, do you listen to all of the genres?
Yes they have an influence on me and I listen to all of his genres.

Can you play all of the genres Cory does?
I can play all of them, yes.

What’s your favourite genre?
My favourite genre is probably Neo Soul.

Do you play any other instruments?
No, I can’t play anything else at the moment but I am learning the drums at the moment. Drums really help me as well. It’s mostly keyboard.

What grade are you on?
I don’t grade on piano but I have been told I am grade 8 standard. I don’t grade on piano because when I come across graded pianists or musicians in general, it’s almost like they are put in this box and it’s like almost like saying you’re as good as… sort of thing. So I feel like if I’m not graded, I don’t get into that criteria.

How did you learn, looking at music or by ear?
Both. I started off by ear to discipline myself. It was very hard to learn by ear.

How many hours did you rehearse when you were younger and what was the most hours?
Probably about 2 hours a day, the more serious I got, the more hours I put in. I got up to 4 hours at one point. But, life kind of hits you and you can’t do that all of the time. It’s a lot of responsibility.

Do you own your own keyboard or Piano?
I own my own keyboard.

Are you in a band?
Not officially, no. I do play with multiple people and when people see us, they think we were in a band.  But no, I’m not in a band.

Would you rather play in a band or on your own?
Depends on what it is, if it was more solo stuff then I would play on my own but some songs it would probably be better in a band.

Do you enjoy your music course? Does it benefit you?
Yes, I do. It allows for a lot of musical freedom.

Gabi Interview

How long did you live in Lithuania for?
I lived there for 21 and a half years.

What was life like there?
My life was all of the time interesting but here I enjoy my life a little bit more.

Why did you move to London?
Actually, I don’t know. My friend just came back from her holiday from the UK and she didn’t want to stay back in Lithuania and she asked me to move to London with her and 2 weeks later, we moved to London. I quit my job in Lithuania and moved with her to London.

How long have you lived here for?
First on June, it will be 2 years.

What jobs have you had here and if you have quit a job or got fired, why?
First of all, when I moved here, I did some housekeeping in hotels. Then I was working in Westfield, Stratford. It was a tea/cocktail shop. Then I became a waitress, working in an Italian restaurant. Then I worked in a hotel as a Conference and events assistant. When I started to work in the hotel, I started to do Karate as well and after s few months, I started doing karate full time as an instructor.

How did you find Shinkyu karate?
On Facebook. I was scrolling on Facebook one day and I saw a sponsored page advertising that they were looking for instructors for part time and full time. I was working as a waitress at the time and I can say I didn’t love my job, it wasn’t my dream job so I was looking for something extra, something like karate. I was doing karate for quite a long time, so I sent them my CV and then they called me and they asked me to come to their training sessions. They asked me to stay at the training for 2 weeks on Tuesdays and Fridays evenings. They said if everything was going alright, you can keep coming. My manager at the restaurant didn’t let me have Fridays off and this is why I left my job. Then I started working in the hotel in the mornings and then I was able to come to the trainings in the evening. After 3 or 4 months, in May they suggested to me to become a full time instructor.

Have you always been a sporty person?
Yes, I have.

Out of all sports, why karate?
I had 3 choices when I was young. You may not believe me, but I remember I was in year 6, I really loved football. I used to play football in the stadium with friends that was one choice. I also had a choice of street dance, freestyle. And last of all martial arts. My friend was doing martial arts and you know how kids like to show off and he looked really cool. And for me an 11 year old girl, is was a really cool thing and my dad saw an advertisement in the newspaper, a little advert. A school that was near me was doing karate training and my dad said to me that we were talking and you said you wanted to do karate so why don’t you go and try it out. I went to that school and stayed here.

How long did it take you to grade?
In the first 2 years, I had 3 grading’s per year, then every year and after 7 or 8 years of doing karate, I got a black belt. This was in Kyokushin Karate. Now my next grading in Shinkyu karate is July. I will have 2 different black belts then. I will have to polish up on a few things to take the grading.

What is your karate called?

Kyokushin Karate.

Gabija is from Lithuania. She has lived in London for 2 years now.
She works for Shinkyu Karate. She is a black belt in her karate but she isn’t graded in Shinkyu karate so she isn’t anything in that karate. But she teaches Shinkyu Karate because they are similar karate practices.

Before she worked at Shinkyu Karate, she used to work at a hotel, but it was not a nice experience.

Aleks Interview

How did you get the interview?

My friend from college works at the Slug and Lettuce. I asked him if there were any vacancies and he asked his boss, and his boss arranged an interview for me. My friend also put in a good word for me to his boss.

How did you prepare for the interview?

I renewed my CV and I asked my friend what kinds of questions he was asked when he went for the interview to get an idea. I also looked up some interview questions online.

How long did it take you to make a cocktail professionally, or close to it?

It took me about 2 months to make half of the list on the menu. I practiced all of the time and eventually, I remembered them all. I even brought the ingredients and went home and practiced.

Tell me about the customers you meet?

I meet a lot of people. A lot of tourists come by and it’s really nice to hear different accents and see different clothing styles.

If a customer is rude, how do deal with them?

I try and calm them down and I talk to them nicely. I will try and find out the reason why they are unhappy and I will try and solve the problem and I will try and get them what they want.

Do you like the company you work for?

I like the company I work for because all through the week they have different offers. By doing this they attract more customers. Also, because of where the restaurant is based, and there are people living above and the bar goes on till late in the morning, the restaurant will give discounts to the people living above.

Task 1 - Types of interviews

Interviews

One Direction interview
Radio

Interview Style: The interview is an entertainment interview. This is to simply entertain One Direction’s fans.
Purpose of interview: It’s informal because it is a relaxed and friendly.
The show is played in the afternoon at 4pm, this means that there will be no swearing or anything rude in the interview because it is not on past 9pm.
Interview Techniques: There is an interviewer (Nick Grimshaw) there and he asks One Direction ‘How are we all’. This is an open question, because he could get a lot of answers. He asks this to make everyone feel comfortable and calm.
This interview is a surprise interview because the boys actually get questioned by their fans and not by Nick, instead he is there to have a small chat with them to make the video more interesting for the fans.
Telephone techniques: There is more to this interview then what you see on the screen, back stage there are people picking up phones and listening to the questions One Direction fans are asking. This is to make sure that their questions aren’t stupid, rude or embarrassing. The people on the phones will be asking the fans questions or a survey to find out if the fan is a nice, genuine person. If they are not a nice person, they will obviously not get through to One Direction.
Journalistic Context: This is a radio interview.

Jessie J
Tv

Interview Style: The interview style is a news/promotional interview. This is to promote Jessie’s new album and to talk about her music and her fans/paparazzi. Also to talk to about her daily life.
Purpose of interview: It’s an information interview. Mainly talking about her music, but there are other things that you find out about who she is as a person and what she likes to do in free time. She talks about how she feels as teenagers look up to her. She shares her opinion.
Interview Techniques: The two BBC presenters only ask a few questions but talked about general things to her.
Questions: The presenters generally asked open questions to be able to get the most information out of Jessie J. For example, ‘’is there any element of competition?’’, they were talking about Jessie’s video featuring Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande. They asked this question because lots of people were asking this over the world and it was a good question to ask to see Jessie’s response.
Structuring: There were some key questions, for example ‘Is there any element of competition?’ This is a question about the two girls she is working with (Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande) this is an important question because Jessie J’s response could be a number of things and she could be rude about the other singers she is working with.
Journalistic Context: This is a TV interview.

Foo Fighters
Print Interview

Interview Techniques/interview style: All of the questions are open questions. This has been done so the interviewer receives a better and more opinionated answer. The people reading this article will be the bands fans, so the questions would be open so it will be more entertaining to read. This is entertainment and an informative article.
Journalistic context: This is an article that is on print.

Purpose of Interview:
This is mainly to let Foo Fighter’s fans understand the choices that Dave Grohl and his band has made. It gives a clear understanding why he has chosen to do something’s other than doing something else.
